Tire balancing corrects the weight distribution of the wheel-tire-hub assembly so it spins without vibration. When a wheel assembly is slightly heavier on one side (due to manufacturing variation in the tire or wheel), it creates a rotational imbalance that shows as a steering-wheel vibration at highway speeds — typically 55–75 MPH. Shops spin each wheel on a computerized balancing machine and attach small lead or zinc weights at precise positions on the rim to counteract the imbalance. Properly balanced tires also wear more evenly.
Balance any time: (1) you buy new tires (always included or should be), (2) you feel a steering-wheel vibration at highway speeds that goes away when you slow below 50 MPH, (3) after hitting a significant pothole or curb (impact can knock a balance weight off), (4) after any flat tire repair, (5) when tires show cupping or scalloping wear patterns (symptom of imbalance-induced bounce). Many shops recommend balance with every tire rotation (every 5,000–7,500 miles) — this is conservative but not unreasonable for high-highway-mileage drivers.
Mild imbalance is annoying but not immediately dangerous. Severe or progressive imbalance causes uneven tire wear (cupping pattern) that leads to premature tire failure, and the shimmy at highway speeds causes driver fatigue and reduces fine steering control. In extreme cases, a wheel with a missing or broken weight can cause vibration severe enough to loosen suspension components over time. If you feel vibration above 55 MPH, get balancing checked before assuming it's an alignment or suspension issue.
Balancing is typically $10–$25 per tire at independent shops. Watch for: (1) shops that balance all four tires regardless of need — a properly-balanced tire that loses no weight should be checked but may not need re-balancing every visit, (2) 'road force balancing' upsells ($25–$50 per tire extra) — this is a legitimate premium service for diagnosing vibrations caused by tire uniformity issues (not just weight imbalance), but it's only necessary if standard balancing doesn't resolve the vibration, (3) shops that reuse old balance weights instead of applying fresh ones when a weight position needs adjusting — ask for new weights if they're removing and remounting.
